In my experience, stranded wire is specified by the overall gauge.  You 
typically have to look at the specs to determine the size and count of 
the individual strands.

Here's a random example.  The product description is HOOK-UP STRND 24AWG 
BLACK 100'.  The details show that it is constructed of 7 strands of 32 
gauge.
