[PLUG-TALK] Alternative to Gmail?

I have been using a Gmail account for years, but over time their
security policies have become unbearable. For example, this morning I
discovered that I had been locked out because some fraudulent person
was trying to access my account with my password. Who was this fiend?
Why, it was moi. I had used Claws-Mail to check all my e-mail accounts
once yesterday evening while I was using Private Internet Access, so my
IP address didn't match what Google thought it should be. If I continue
with them and use a VPN I'm going to be locked out daily, as my IP
address may change wildly. And to get back into your account you have
to let them text you a code (my phone does not have text capabilities),
or go through half a dozen questions - what was my wife's maiden name
(never married), and on and on. The final straw was when they suggested
that allowing a Linux device to have access to my account was a
security risk. This is not my bank account we're talking about here,
it's just a freaking e-mail account.

It will take a while until I get everything tied to Google into another
mail service, but I think it's worth the effort. I've had enough of
Google.

I have another free e-mail account with gmx.com, that I really like,
but I thought I'd ask if anyone has good luck with any others.
Suggestions?
