You do not need a white background. You can, for instance, project onto 
a beige wall. Your eye/brain will compensate. Though you will have some 
change of white. For instance, a yellow wall will show whatever is 
yellow in the projection to be whiter.  Unless you are sensitive to 
color balancing it will look fine.
