[PLUG-TALK] Android filesystem / permissions / ownership

I have a new Note 20 Ultra factory unlocked. On my laptop I have 64GB
of MP3s that I want to copy to the phone. I bought a couple of USB
drives that have two connectors, one USB3.0, and on the other end a
Type C, capacity 128GB. My plan was to copy all the MP3s to the USB
drive from the laptop using its USB3.0 plug, then plug the drive into
the phone with the drive's Type C plug. But I had a problem because the
drive came formatted NTFS and my laptop has ext4, and the two were not
doing well together - random files failed o copy. To get around this I
deleted the NTFS partition on the drive and then created an ext4
partition instead (using Gparted), mounted it, and took possession with
chown. The file transfer took about 15 minutes, but eventually it all
worked and I have all the MP3s on the drive.

I unmounted the drive from the laptop and removed it, then plugged it
into the phone using the drive's Type C plug. When I looked at the
phone's file manager it sees the USB drive as "USB Storage," but when I
try to view it I get "Could not connect to USB storage."

It might be the filesystem on the drive (ext4), or the permissions. Or
something else that I haven't thought of.

I need some clues. For starters, what filesystem type does Android use?
