OK, I tried that. In the laptop the folder Android appears in the root
of the partition, and I decided to leave it alone and just create
another root folder 'MP3s.'

Then I tried to copy my MP3 files to it, and it failed. I started by
selecting 209 of them from the laptop's folder, and dragged them to
another GUI file manager window displaying the new MP3s folder. It
copied 35 of the 209.

Now this is exactly the problem I had when I was using the new drive
straight from the manufacturer (SanDisk), formatted as NTFS. After
fiddling with it for a while I just said, 'screw it,' deleted the NTFS
partition, replaced it with ext4, mounted it, used chown on it, and
then all my MP3s copied to it perfectly without fail.

Checking the new Android partition on the drive, apparently it is Win95
exFAT, a Microsoft patent which was released so that others can use it.
Evidently it is supported in Linux with the 5.4 kernel (I have
5.4.0-72).

I also tried copying the 209 files and pasting them into the USB drive,
but I got the same errors. Just for kicks I took ownership with chown
-R of the entire partition, but it didn't make any difference

I did not try the command line, mostly because I'd have to use
wildcards, and every time I've tried wildcards I have ended up with a
mess. Plus all the file names have multiple spaces in them.

I don't understand why my laptop is happy to mount the exFAT partition,
and will copy some files to it, but not others. I looked at the files
to see if there was something obviously different about the ones that
won't copy, but I can't see anything. If something works it should work
all the way or not at all.
