If I correctly recall I used the USB cable when I first tried the mic and it
didn't have sufficient gain or some other issue.

The new cable will be here today. Since cables on other devices have turned
out to be bad in threads on this mail list I decided to eliminate it for the
mic.

What other debugging steps should I try?
