I have a macbook and followed apple's instructions. I did both the
update and reset processes, the latter apparently wiping data. But, I
get:

 1) Hello
    slide to setup

 2) English

 3) Select your Country or Region
    [United States]

 4) Choose a Wi-Fi Network
    [my home network]

 5) Activation Lock
Apple ID: [my apple id as an email address]
    Password: [my apple password]

 6) Activating...

 7) apple logo appears

 8) Hello (rinsing and repeating indefinitely)

On my macbook, I don't have anything actually called iTunes, but when I
plugged the cable in between the macbook and phone according to their
instructions, I was talking to something and I successfully detected the
phone and updated and "reset" it (or some other word that started with
an 'R').
