How about REUSING the COMPONENTS of an iPhone 4?
If an iPhone 4 is still potentially useful (on US or
overseas networks), there are probably MILLIONS of
repairable iPhone 4s with cracked screens, cracked cases,
broken power/audio connectors ... that can use those parts.
Even without crypto keys and other circumventions for
Apple's monopolistic control, "organ transplants" to
support other iPhone 4 owners will keep money in our
community and away from Apple and their foreign suppliers.
It is also an opportunity to be an Alpha Hardware Hacker.
I can imagine competitions to see who can perform the most
audacious or microscopic repair. Adding new chips and
features? Adding high gain antennas for long distance
connection, perhaps even adding a Starlink terminal?
Focused Ion Beam rewiring on the uncapped chips?
My first preteen electronics projects used components
from dumpstered televisions. Today's circuits are much
smaller, but microscopes are much cheaper. Hobbyists
cannot (yet) make billion transistor integrated circuits,
but those monster chips often have features the product
manufacturer did not exploit. Find them and use them!
Go Thee Forth and HACK!
