A couple months ago I stopped by a branch in early afternoon, handed the
teller my debit card, and asked what my balance was. She said she was
unable to tell me because her computer was down. In further discussions
I discovered that the entire branch had been without a connection all
day. I asked for the operations manager and then told him to close all
my accounts and give me the balance in cash. He said he couldn't do so.
I went home, wrote the manager a letter telling them to terminate all my
accounts and send me the money, and why I was doing so. I received no
reply, so I sent them a copy by certified mail. That finally got action.

It used to be that a bank's standing with consumers dropped when they
became financially strapped, because under such circumstances they
raise fees and charges in an effort to produce more revenue. In the
case of US Bank the problem appears to be gross incompetence.
