[PLUG-TALK] Protecting Bats from Antennas

My wife and I camped Monday night. We used hipcamp.com,
like airbnb for small campsites on private land. We
stayed in a remote bit of woodland in the Coast Range.
Recommended, especially while the pandemic lingers.
After setting up the tent and dinner, we watched the stars
and moon from inside the car. Twice, there was a THUMP
followed by the car radio antenna vibrating. I realized
that the antenna had been struck by a bat, whose sonar
misidentified the 5 millimeter ball at the end of the
antenna as an insect on a branch.
I folded some paper into a cupped "flag" that I placed
over the antenna ball. No more bat impacts that night,
and seemingly fewer biting insects.
Bats are my mosquito-munching buddies.
So - protect woodland bats by covering the ball at the
end of your car radio antenna (do they still make those?).
Keep'em flying!
Keith
