I finally sort of solved the problem in Chromium. On the Settings page
for Search engines I suddenly noticed that the listed engines contained
three buttons at the end. Right clicking on each one (DuckDuckGo was
listed twice) offered the option to delete it. After deleting the two
DuckDuckGo entries a search now uses Ecosia.
The only problem is now that DDG has been deleted, what if I want to go
back to it? This episode has enlightened me that there are numerous
search engines, several of which I have never heard of before. How do I
add a search engine to a browser?
And I'm glad you mentioned Brave. I wanted to take it for a spin, but
it's not listed in Synaptic. I suppose it's another snap thing. Edit:
Yeah, it's snap, but it installed OK. I spent the past two hours
getting rid of the trash and transferring my bookmarks. I think I'll
use it for a while. Apparently it uses its own search engine.
