[PLUG-TALK] SMS alternatives for landlines?

As I mentioned in a prior (too long) posting, I do not use
a "smart phone / dodopaddle" or sliders and gestures and
swipes to receive and send SMS texts.  That "channel" is
not accessible to me.

Are there services or Linux software or interface devices
that work with ordinary landlines, and can exchange those
texts as ASCII with a large computer screen, keyboard, and
mouse ?

Extra points for an additional "SMS to spoken letters or
words" alternative; I'm not vision impaired (yet), but
friends are.
