Hi.

I'm in very preliminary discussions with a company regarding the
implementation of a POS and appointment scheduling system.  Customer is
VERY interested in GPL or merely Open Source software because of previous
vendor lock-in.

There are some apparently very mature systems out there, but none have
integretated appointment scheduling of the type that might be required and
I think perhaps the integration with inventory control systems will have
to be customized.

Ultimately, the project will require a developer (likely C++ with some
knowledge of Gnome) for the integration task and a sysadmin/developer for
long-term management and administration.  It's possible that this could be
the same person.

It should be understood up front that a successful outing here could yield
a product that is viable to replace an industry (sub)standard piece of
software with a Free/Open equivalent.  This software could then be
re-implemented at other similar institutions.  Then a network of local
admins/developers could be developed that kept customers happy over time
with patches, feature updates, and general knowledge sharing.

I'm interested in hearing from anyone who believes they have the requisite
skills to work on this project.  Please understand that cost is very much
an issue and part of the reason for not continuing with the proprietary
solution.

A rough estimate of cost (perhaps hourly rate?) would be nice.  Of course,
it's all pending serious discussion.
