[PLUG] ~/.fonts in RH 8

I have read in various news groups and web pages that
if you place fonts in a directory named .fonts in your
home directory then they will be automatically added to
the X font server. However, I have never been able to
get this *feature* to work. Does anyone have any ideas
on how to get RH 8.0 to work in this manner?
