Thanks for the suggestion.  This is how I generated the log bits I
included in my original mail.  They weren't very helpful to me (or
Google), but I'm still hoping someone here can decipher them a little.

I wondered about it too, but I think I've eliminated that fairly well
by removing xdm from startup (no change).
