[PLUG] xdm works but startx fails

Yup; no difference.  The output of 'startx' was identical.  The log
file itself had a couple minor differences:

/var/log/XFree86.0.log :
(++) RADEON(0): DPI set to (100, 100)
...                         ^^^  ^^^
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 7, (OK)
                             ^^^

/var/log/XFree86.2.log :
(==) RADEON(0): DPI set to (75, 75)
...
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 6, (OK)
