Now I can tell you what the "resize" option does since I just read the 
corresponding section of the ImageMagick man page.  The "resize" option is 
(mostly) an alias for the "geometry" option.  This, combined with the default 
quality value, which equals 75, and the fact that ImageMagick applies the 
compression appropriate to the specified file format by default, makes the 
file size issues that you described rather curious (and makes my previously 
suggested solution rather bogus -- although it works for me with jpeg files).
