  GRASS (Geographic Resource Analysis and Support System) is a GIS and image
analysis system. Most of the modules operate on raster (grid) data, but the
support for vector data is getting better. There are approximately 350
modules, but the major strength remains spatial analyses. Cartographic map
production has been a low priority. It started life in the early 1980s as
the Fort Hood (Texas) Environmental Information System and was taken over by
the Army Corps of Engineers' Construction Engineering Research Lab (CERL) at
the University of Illinois. A couple of years ago CERL dropped the project
and the copyright and project management was taken over by Baylor
University.
