If your wallet can take the hit there is a very excellent book out now.  
Translated from German but very few 'odd' sentences.  It is available from 
folks that bring you www.freegis.org (got it right this time) and several 
on line book suppliers.  The advantage of FreeGIS is it includes a copy of 
the FreeGIS CD with GRASS, Mapserver, several other GISish programs and 
at least two sample data sets:  Spearfish, North Dakota and somewhere in 
North Carolina (memory is low and slow today).

Examples of how to do most everything that GRASS and the other programs 
do.  Good examples.
   I've been a GIS 'loyal roadie' for years just never had a job that 
required me to really learn how use the programs.  I worked cadastral 
surveys for the US Forest Service for 10+ years so I'm a little familiar 
with GIS and maps.  This book is good!

Caveat:  I ship the FreeGIS CD to North America for Intevation but not the 
book.  This explains some of my enthusiasm for what Intevation is 
doing with/for the FreeGIS CD.
