[PLUG] Installing software

HI All.
Okay, well my version of OpenOffice won't open without Java and my
dwnld of j2sdk is corrupt. So it goes to the back burner till next
week.
IN the mean time, I'd like to install samba from a tar file,
installing it so that more than one user can use it.
Where is a good source of information on how to do the install and
make it so that multi-users can use this samba?

I'm mostly at a loss as to WHERE to install it.Of course making it
available to all users means I need to know how to set it up for them
as well.

Same with Apache. If I get the first done, I'll try the second.
