I had a similar problem that I traced to the text-based mouse system (gpm)
holding onto the mouse when I switched back to X.  Usually it was because
I'd bumped the desk so the mouse was moving just as I switched back.

The X logs showed an error related to "can't grab pointer" or something
along those lines.

I solved it by removing gpm.
