Modify /etc/rc.d/rc.4 to load the session manager of your choice.

FWIW, I'd just recompile gdm manually.  The libraries it is trying to
use and you replaced for it weren't compiled for your system.

Where'd you get the updated patch?  There may be others there that are
related.  You might go grab the 'whichpkg' script (dunno where it is,
though) to find out which package the missing library is contained in,
then check the /patches directory for an updated version of the package
that contains the library... if that makes sense.
