I was hoping to not have to resort to sending out forged, gratutious
arps... but worse-case I should be able to get that to work. In theory.

That is exactly what I was trying to do with the dummy devices.
It didn't work in that case (I didn't try too hard, as you say the
general concept is a bad bad trick).

<shrug>  At least I'm no longer left with the feeling that I'm
overlooking something obvious ;-)
