Part of the problem is that proficiency at shell scripting implies to
a large degree proficiency with the standard Unix utilities.

The various Linux distributions package the GNU utils in different
ways, but you might try starting with

  info coreutils

Oh, wait. You'll have the coreutils package if your distro is of
recent vintage. Otherwise, you'll have the old package sets:
fileutils, textutils, and sh-utils (and maybe others; I forget).

And, if you're doing much development work

  info binutils
