Update time.  I've been playing with this (above) in the last week 
or so, and have made a small amount of progress.

Right now my roadblock is a problem importing USGS DEMs into 
GRASS.  r.in.gdal segfaults when I try.  I found a bug report 
that only partially explains it; maybe there's enough info there 
to help, maybe not.

I'll post again when I've made some progress.  In the meantime 
I've run across all kinds of links to 'doze progs that supposedly 
create stunning 3D visualizations directly from USGS data.
