As much as I hate to contribute to the continuation of this thread...

nmap isn't just looking so much.

To make the comparison of somebody on the street 'nmap'ing your house...
they don't walk past it, taking two looks at it.

They drive up to the house and try the garage door.  Then they go around
the house, checking every door and every window to see if any are open. 
They then gather as much information through the windows and doors, and
how they do or do not open, and try and figure out what model the house
is, who the builder was, who drew up the blueprints, etc.  That
information could then be looked up and any possible security holes
found.

They may not actually break in to the house, but if you're sitting in
your PJs at 2AM watching TV in the family room and see some dude walking
around *your* house, trying to open all the doors and windows... are you
going to just sit there and invite the total stranger inside... or are
you going to really consider calling the cops, but not until after
you've checked to make sure your .38 is loaded?
