The BEST program to learn was BASIC.
Line numbers kept everything straight, and you could write meaningful and 
useful programs, from stepwise integral FOR-NEXT loops to crack your physics 
homework problems, to simple but fun text adventure games ...

... and you never even KNEW there was a "compiler." (what's that?)
