[PLUG] Learning where eth0 went

My new(est) box was booted before I plugged in the cat5 network cable.
Then I plugged it in and saw a reflection of the green lcd inside the card.
So it looks from both ends (the other end being the switch) that the
connection is electrically alive.
However, I cannot bring up the interface. I ran 'ifconfig eth0 up' and was
informed that there is no such interface. So I ran '/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1',
then re-ran ifconfig. Still no eth0. Running ethtool confirms that the
system cannot find the card.
Suggestions on how I can trace to the source of the problem? It may be
obvious, but not to me this late on a Friday.
Many thanks,
Rich
