Evan,

   Do you refer to permissions? At what do I look to determine the security
mode?

   /etc/samba/smbpasswd. It had permissions 600 which I just changed to 666
... nope. Makes no difference.

   On the linux side it's /data2/winstuff. On the virtual win98 side it's
\\salmo\winstuff. In /etc/samba/smb.conf the last stanza reads:

; share name -- modified by RBS 2004-09-22
[winstuff]
    comment = Shared directory for group vmwin98
    path = /data2/winstuff
    writable = yes
    valid users  = @vmwin98
    locking = yes
    create mode = 0660
    directory mode = 0770

   Yes; see above.

   See above.

   I don't care what flavor share it is. I need a way to get geospatial data
into the virtual machine for analyses and mapping with MapInfo and I need a
way of getting product back out to the linux side. I don't recall having to
use a password before, but this was set up in 1998 or so and not needed to
be attended to since. My synaptic connections on what was done then have
deteriorated into connections of what I had for dinner last evening. If it's
easy to reconfigure the virtual machine and samba for a public share, I'll
be happy to do it. I just want it to work.

Many thanks,

Rich
