I have good luck running diff Linux distros (*buntu, Debian, CentOS,
OpenSuse) on my Lenovo Thinkpad T60. I bought it refurbished in '07 and it
still runs great.

I've used both of these sites for getting help w. installing and running
Linux on Thinkpads:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkWiki
http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/ibm.html

And I just discovered that the Lenovo web site has what appears to be very
good support and documentation.
"We are committed to providing our customers with information to assist you
in utilizing the Linux operating system on various personal computing
systems."
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-48nt8d

Good luck w. finding a suitable notebook to run Linux on for school!
