[PLUG] Problems with browser on Ubuntu 8.04 server

Hi,

Did the last email I sent to the list get to the list? I haven't seen
it show up in my inbox on my gmail account. Is it the case that my
question is not appropriate for the list? Is it the case that no one
is answering the questions? I've gotten part way with watching you
tube videos in Firefox on Ubuntu, but I still have no sound, and the
video is choppy. Perhaps my questions are too newbie. If so,
perhaps, someone can suggest a more appropriate venue for my
inquiries.

Sincerely,
Victor Soich

Hi all,

I need help with sound and I suppose some tweaking with buffering in
order to hear and watch you tube videos.  I installed ubuntu server
8.04 at the most recent clinic.  I installed the Xfce desktop
environment, which came with the Firefox web browser.  I followed the
help below in order to watch flash videos.

I did

~/Desktop$ sudo dpkg -i install_flash_player_10_linux.deb

from the terminal, as suggested above.

I now am able to watch videos, but not smoothly at all.  I have a
broadband, i.e. Comcast, connection.  Before, I was simply met with
instructions that said I had to download the latest version of flash.
I did that, as indicated above.  Now, when I watch videos, they are
extremely "choppy".  They are not smooth at all.  There is a message
that says "Buffer Full".  I did not have this sort of problem when
this machine had windows on it.  How do I make my videos run smoothly?

Also, I don't have any sound.  I have me speakers installed physically
in the same way as they were when windows was on the machine.  How do
I get sound out of them.  Do I have to figure out what sound card I
have, download the appropiate drivers, install them, et. al.  Or is
there something simple I can do?

Please help me to get my videos in Firefox on Linux working smoothly,
and sound so I can hear them.

Thank You,

Victor Soich
