Wuala.com is an interesting new startup. Think of it as dropbox but
with these important differences:
(a) data is encrypted locally... wuala people can't see it unless you
give them your local password
(b) you get 1G or 2G for free (like dropbox), but if you have a server
that has relatively constant net connectivity and some spare disk, you
can trade them up to 1-1 for cloud storage. As in, you give them 50GB
of space on your box, and you get 50GB of cloud space *for free*.
(c) you can select that a folder is mapped to a local folder in either
sync or backup mode. If sync mode, every change is reflected as quickly
as possible, even to people sharing the folder.
So, you'd get a wuala.com account, donate 20GB to the cause, and then
store your 20GB of stuff in either a cloud-based password-protected
directory (need URL to access) or a public directory (anyone can
access). It'd be in the cloud, so it won't use your bandwidth no matter
how many downloads people make once you upload.
If you need an invite, let me know... you'll get 2GB initial instead of
1GB.
