Update: After finishing the previous e-mail I turned to the Dell and saw 
that the screen had gone blank. Out of habit I moved the mouse and 
discovered that it was active and I had a mouse pointer on the screen. 
The list of error messages was still there. I hit <ENTER> and Ubuntu 
12.04 booted up. I logged in. The update manager has 500 updates, which 
it is now installing. I'll see what happens after that, but I wonder if 
that will fix the boot problem.
