I built a high availability mysql setup that used DRBD to mirror the
database at the disk level.

It was not the easiest thing I have ever set up but you could test it by
yanking the power cord out the back and then watch the failover partner
come up automatically  with in a couple of seconds and take up where it
left off without data loss. You might want to look into this to ensure a
more resilient master.
