[PLUG] ThinkPad X200 display issue

I am not sure if this was a upgrade or just something dying of old age.

My X200 all of a sudden started showing a variation in intensity, at
about 3-5 hz rate. It does not flash it just goes from one level of
intensity
down to one that is perhaps 3 steps lower then it goes back up to full
intensity, at the above rate. Also I notice that the color is more towards
the red. I am running a 2nd screen on the video port, and after a while
of this the laptop screen goes dark.

Have I lost the tube driver or is a tube going bad or have I got a driver
issue? This appeared to happy after a Ubuntu update here a couple
of days ago. I tend more to believe it is hardware related, but I do not
see much on the web about this sort of thing.
