It seems to me that I have always had to do that. When I open a .jpg in
the GIMP it doesn't actually open the file; it imports it and converts
it to .xcf, and that is what I work on. But it doesn't tell me that it
has imported it and converted it to .xcf, so when I go to save it I
discover that I have to export it first. Annoying. But fortunately I
don't have to use the GIMP often.
