John,
I do not want to discourage your efforts to raise the technology level
of this system, but suppose you schlep the laptop to the CPAP machine,
so you are less likely to forget to put the card back in the machine.
Crude but maybe effective.
I offer this idea because I know squat about wireless cards, so cannot
answer your original question.
