   More information.

ntpd was upgraded last month, and the new ntp.conf file replaced the old
one. No pools were specified in the new ntp.conf by uncommenting them. I
just did so; now ntp.conf has:

# NTP server (list one or more) to synchronize with:
server 0.pool.ntp.org iburst
server 1.pool.ntp.org iburst
server 2.pool.ntp.org iburst
server 3.pool.ntp.org iburst

   Restarted ntpd.

Ran 'hwclock -w' and now the hwclock and date commands show the same time.
But, 'ntpdate' reports:

16 Jan 11:39:36 ntpdate[5364]: no servers can be used, exiting

I find no man page for ntpdate.

And the timestamp in the tar'd directory is still at 2015-01-16 20:47; in
other words, that time has not changed for more than an hour.

My confusion remains. What have I missed?

Rich
