I had another current backup and restored from it, it was okay and 
brought normal functionality to the whole system (This is why I always 
make at least 2 backups daily)

Could not do this, although I tried.

The second backup was able to save the system.  Apparently the first 
backup was corrupted and could NOT successfully restore the /usr partition.

I consider this problem now resolved and closed.
