It is not just opening another tab, it is opening another tab, going to
that tab, then going BACK to the tab that is hung up.

Also sometimes a minimie/maximize of the window "unsticks" it, but
I think I saw you say that your getting a "can not find page" error
if you wait long enough.  That is different, that is indicative of
DNS failures for some reason, and or socket open failure.

The tcpdump/wireshark trace would tell a lot about that aspect of things.
