OK, this morning with a clear head I now have new information. I don't
know why I didn't do this before, but I went to ~/.mozilla and renamed
the folder to .mozilla.8.22.2019, then closed and restarted Firefox
normally. It worked! Of course, all my settings, bookmarks, and add-ons
are gone, but web pages are able to get to the internet.
My thinking is that this proves that it is something in my personal
configuration that is causing the problem, not a problem with Ubuntu
security or the Ubuntu add-ons to Firefox. I long suspected this, but
now we have proof.
The problem remains trying to figure out which setting it is. Later
today I will rename the new .mozilla folder that it created just now,
then poke around in the old one to see if I get any clues. The answer
is in there somewhere.
