Dick being one of the Good Ones, I will answer the "Is anyone
else having trouble ..." question with "no, not for me, not yet"
I used V 6.4.7.2 on a new install of Mate Ubuntu 20.04.3,
the first and second time I opened Calc after the install,
starting with an empty spreadsheet and cells with asdfasdf
and 12341234 side by side, selected together.
I'm plenty busy, but for a Good One I would be glad to
attempt the merge Dick is attempting on an example that
Dick emails to me. I'm juggling computers. They break
when you do that, so my response might be tardy.
If the merge works for me and not for him, then Dick might try:
1) exporting the spreadsheet to text, then reimport
2) reinstalling Libre Office
3) reinstalling the OS
4) exorcism
I agree with Dick that working from an observed discrepancy
to an objective description to a pointer into a vast collection
of random nattering about Libre Office (over many years in
many languages for many versions and configurations) is Very
Difficult, somewhat like finding the two prime factors of a
1024 bit composite integer. Far easier if you know one of
the factors, but how can you know the factor, or the phrases
chosen by another person who solved the merge problem ...
... or not?

P.S. I posted a similar plaintive question about X and
paired rotated screens a week ago, and got no answer.
I may have found an answer, and a solution, and will
post it Real Soon Now, to be lost in an unsearchable sea
of similar solutions to "uniquely phrased" questions.
The trail of mis-descriptions and false starts and
fails would make a good-sized magazine article.
