I had a recollection that the nVidia drivers might be the problem. I
found instructions for removing then and going to the Nouveau drivers at:
https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-linux-tips/disable-remove-nvidia-drivers-on-ubuntu/
That site is aimed at standard Ubuntu, but by following the command line
instructions, with the exception of the one that wants ubuntu-desktop
installed, and substituting xubuntu-desktop, the removal worked. The
nouveau drivers were present, and a reboot brought up the normal xubuntu
screen.
