[PLUG] question on automating a scan to computer operation

It also sounds like a lot of this could be simplified into a series of command line steps that can be run over SSH. I don't know what the GIMP steps are, but chances are that the initial scan to the folder could be completed without leaving the scanner by using a laptop to SSH into the desktop.
You could then either run GIMP to perform whatever edits are necessary at the desktop all at the same time. Or if all you are doing is a format conversion, there are probably commandline tools that could do the same thing at the moment of the scan.
Either way, using SSH from a mobile device while standing at the scanner would eliminate the walking without drastically changing the overall workflow.
