This got me somewhere, I found the 3 files two of which referenced
other items and another one called  with a name of "machine" in there
I found raspberrypi2. I changed it to rpivan (unit in my van) and I
was after a reboot able to ping rpivan. The machine name on the
command line is still raspberrypi2, but the host name is now responding
to rpivan.

Thank you for giving me that guidance. Now I an rename all of these
machines and get rid of having to do funnies with the routers.
