Actually, operator error. I've been printing some 5.5 x 8.5 pages to go 
in a small 3-ring binder. Somehow I managed to set the default paper 
size in the printer to 5 x 8. Doing a pure copy in the printer produced 
the same problem, but reading the fine print in the LCD display showed 
me that it was trying to use 5 x 8 paper. Resetting the default to 
Letter size solved the problem

Thanks to everyone who suffered through this with me. I'll endeavor to 
pay more attention the next time something like this comes up.
