The Sony Walkman was introduced in 1979. That was, afaik, the first
small portable audio player.

I have not personally used a pocket mp3 player in a long time, so I
have no idea what the control or feedback displays are common today. I
would generally recommend trying something inexpensive and go from
there. I see a device on Amazon for $6 that might work fine for you:
